Vintage Steelers: Tired of Reminiscing About Those 70’s Steelers

I hate Tom Brady and the Patriots…well, not really.  But, I do hate that they are so very close to tying the Steelers with the most Super Bowl wins.  It’s killing me.  But, before we get into this I need to update you on my wife’s and I plans on winning the lottery and becoming part owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Hasn’t happened.  Yet.  We’re not happy about it but we think it will happen soon.  Please dear God let it happen soon.  I want to meet Franco, Rocky, Mel, Lambert (if he’s in a good mood), Mean Joe, Mike Wagner, Swanny, Stallworth, etc.  Until we win, these things are not happening.

So, back to hating the Patriots.  I’ve decided that I’m not watching the Super Bowl.  Sick and tired of seeing this team win.  To me all the other teams are really bad.  REALLY BAD!!!  It’s a joke that they win so much.  Now, the Jets just signed the Dolphins former coach?  The Patriots just clinched the division title for the next three years.  But, if I were a Patriots fan I’d be bragging 24 hours a day about how my team is so much better than yours.  Now I know what the other teams in the 70s felt like during most of those years.  When I was a kid in the 70s I was the loud obnoxious jerk that reminded anyone within shouting distance that my team was so much better than yours.  My brother, who is older and was the Cowboys fan in the family, probably beat me on a daily basis.  Maybe not beat but a punch in the arm from him lasted a long time.

My uncles were Packers fans, grew up in the 60s, and a Philly fan.  They were easy to make mad.  We had 3 channels on tv to choose from and on game day the Steelers were on.  As soon as Don Criqui or Dick Enberg yelled, “Touchdown Steelers!” I was the one who repeated it to everyone in the room.  On a typical Sunday at my grandma’s house there could be as many as ten people crammed into the small living room attached to the bathroom.  That’s another story for another day.  Just think, all of us eating lunch then watching football in a room next to the only bathroom in the 1800s house.  Everyone was probably already a little agitated.  That’s where I came in.  Anyways, the 70s Steelers never lost while I was a kid.  Four Super Bowls in six years.  That’s what I’m talkin’ about.  I could make a case for at least another two Super Bowl wins in that decade.  The loss to Miami an 1972 could’ve been one as the loss to Oakland in 1976 could also have been a victory.  A win in 76 would’ve definitely led to a win against Minnesota in Super Bowl XI.  That would have been three in a row!!!  Just think about that for a second.  And now New England is on the verge…AGAIN… of tying us for the most Super Bowl wins.

Make it stop!!!!  What has me ranting about this is that every year at this time we look back at the “This day in History” and it’s about this time when we reminisce about those Super Bowl wins.  Every January the old farts like myself look back at the good old days.  I’m sure that the younger generation is tired of us doing this just as we are tired of our fathers looking back at their good old days and reminding us that their time was better than our time.  So anyway, I hate Tom Brady and the Patriots!  Well, not really.  Not like I hate that team from Maryland.  I really do not like that team!!!
