First, tell me a bit about what made Pittsburgh the place to sign with this offseason? Anything to do with the big play you had last preseason versus Pittsburgh when you were with Tennessee?
After the season ended the Steelers invited five linebackers in for a workout and it went really well. I loved the interaction with Tomlin and the other staff while I was working out. They called me three-to-four weeks later to sign me. It was exciting.
I just think they saw the hard work ethic I had and the work I put in during the workout. And the love for the game I have. I just showed them what I could do I guess. Now it’s up to me to show them I deserve to make the team.
Any preference you have for playing inside versus outside in Pittsburgh?
Whatever spot they put me in – it doesn’t matter. Whatever they have me focus on – I don’t care what position. I’m just excited to sit down with the coaches and start learning things. Whatever they need me to do I’ll be willing to go out there and get the job done – whatever it takes.
Is there a preference though – did they let you know of a preference?
I like to think I have a well-rounded game and can play the pass and the run. You have to have that in the NFL. I’m doing offseason training predicated on getting stronger and good in my drops and man to man coverage. Footwork is crucial.
I also want to show them that I’m a leader and can rally guys around me. I look forward to showing them when I get there.
A couple of Western Michigan guys on the team already in Chuks and Keion Adams. Did you reach out to them for pointers?
Yeah Keion and Chucks both congratulated me. I haven’t spoken to them much though. It’s the offseason so both are doing their thing right now where they’re at and I’m training here wth my brother Simmie Cobbs who plays for the Saints. He’s lived with my family since he was a freshman in high school so he’ll help me too.
What are you excited about most – and when do you expect to come to Pittsburgh to get set up?
I’ll come down right before OTAs – until then I’m doing all I can to prepare.
I’m looking forward to getting to Pittsburgh. We used to vacation here when I was young and I love the city. I just want to get there and earn the trust of my teammates and show them who I am. Whatever happens after that is up to me.
And of course special teams are critical to making the squad. You have experience on special teams?
Oh yeah that’s the first thing you need to do to make the 53, I played special teams in college and at Tennessee. I’m ready to go and make an impact there.
Anything else we should know about you?
I have a good work ethic. I think Pittsburgh believes in that and has a great family environment. I just want to get there and feel what they feel.
I have a lot of passion for the game of football and I’m grateful for this opportunity. I went to family vacations in Pittsburgh. I’m looking forward to helping the team win.
And my grandfather played for the Steelers in the 50’s – he was a Pro Bowl player – Johnny Lattner. It’ll be cool to play where he played and follow in his footsteps.
