First, what made you decide to sign sup for the USFL draft?
I was with the Raiders last season but I wasn’t re-signed. I thought this would be another avenue for me to play and get some film, rather than just be a bubble player.
I tore my achilles in 2019 and it’s been hard to have any stability on teams after that. I just hopeful this opportunity will help me know. I feel great now.
Were you surprised to be drafted by the Maulers?
Yeah – no one contacted me throughout the process so I was surprised by all of it. When they first posted my name when I was drafted I didn’t recognize it – I go by Nico and they posted Nicholas so I had to do a double-take when I saw my name.
Have you spoken to the coaches much yet about your role and next steps?
We haven’t spoken about any of that yet – I don’t know anything yet about the system.
You’ve mostly played center, but also played tackle and guard. What do you prefer and how has that versatility helped you?
I’ve started at center and that’s my natural position. I’d expect to play center.
The versatility – it all helps. As a center you need to know what everyone is doing so playing those other positions helps me understand what they are doing. I can see how the defense is situated better because of that. And of course versatility helps with the team as well and making the team.
You’re one of the most experienced players on the roster in terms of professional experience. How does that impact you there?
I know what the top is like – what the peak of professional football is like and how to play in it. Not taking away anything from the guys on the roster – I haven’t really looked through the whole roster yet – and I know all of the guys are talented. I just know what it’s like to play against the best and what it takes and am happy I can show that here.
Do you know many of the players and coaches on the roster?
I have a former teammates Arjene Harris who’s on the roster. But other than that I’m pretty unfamiliar with the roster or staff. I spoke briefly with the coaches but other than that I haven’t had any other contact. It hasn’t been a very transparent process yet. I’ve spoken to my agent about things but not with the team much yet.
Ever been to Pittsburgh?
We played the Steelers last year and I went to Primanti’s – that was solid. And I was JuJu’s former roommate at USC and played with Banner too. They told me about the city – we’ve stayed in touch. People who play there love the city.
I’m excited to play for Pittsburgh. From everything I’ve been told the fans treat the players well.
Unfortunately we’ll all be staying here in Birmingham, Alabama due to Covid and won’t be playing in Pittsburgh. At least the championship game will be in Canton.
Lastly, what should fans know about you outside of football?
I’m a big family guy. I’m from L.A. – it’s a big melting pot with different cultures and I like exploring different cultures and food. I’m a big food guy. I also love playing some basketball.
