First, can you let me know what you’ve been up to since your playing days?

I’m coaching now. Doing private training here in Fort Myers and coaching at D1 Training. I’ve been coaching since 2018 – at Florida Atlantic under Lane Kiffin, then at Tennessee under Coach Pruitt, then for Coach Flores in Miami in 2020-2021. I also coached at Boston College and helped with their recruiting.

Now I’m here in Fort Myers and will also do some high school coaching this year at Lee High Senior High school.

First off, can you let me know what you are up to now?

I learned I was no longer fast enough to play in the NFL! That’s when I retired. After that I coached the tight ends at Oregon State for a year. I never really told many people before, but I actually got a call from the Steelers during their fall camp after Jonathan Decker blew out his knee asking me to come back. They needed a viable third string tight end to backup Heath and Jerame.

I had the plane ticket for that 2009 season – I just didn’t feel good about it. I couldn’t sleep that night and ended up calling Kevin Colbert and told him I made a commitment to Coach Riley at Oregon State and couldn’t leave in the middle of camp there. My heart wasn’t into it – and when that’s the case it’s just more like physical abuse. So I made the decision to stay at Oregon State.

First, can you let me know what you’ve been ups to since your NFL playing days?

I just won a championship last year in Toronto in the CFL – I retired after that. I had an interception and some tackles so I left on a good note. I never won a championship before.

Now, I’m coaching high school football at my alma mater, Los Alamitos in California. I’m working with the kids and showing them how to navigate all the things I had to as a kid. The football part will always be there – the hard work and practice. But the off-field distractions – mental focus, staying healthy and taking care of your body – that is what I am trying to help them with most. I want to help them get ready for that next step – college. I’m helping them to understand the mental aspect of the game to help them prepare.

First off can you let me know what you’ve been up to since your time in the NFL?

I’ve owned a jewelry store –  House of Diamonds – now for 28 years here in Overland Park, Kansas. 85% of what we sell we manufacture – that helps us  from a marketing and advertising standpoint. Our affiliation with the NFL has helped the business immensely. We build the ambassador rings for the Chiefs – for the guys that retired that get inducted into their ambassadors club. The relationship I’ve had with the Steelers and Packers helped with that.

First off, I know you’ve been coaching now – tell me how you got started doing that?

It started in the area where I live in Atlanta. My oldest boy was in sixth grade -he was in middle school, and my youngest was in second grade. I was the dad taking his kids to practice and watching from the sidelines when word got out that I was there.  Coach Brunner came up to me and asked if I wanted to get involved in coaching then.

I was retired so I figured I’d try it out, and I’ve been loving it since. I started at the middle school level but now I moved up to high school.

First, can you let me know what you’ve been up to since you time splaying in the NFL?

I’m the Vice President for Player Engagement in New Orleans now. I’m helping to mentor young players – trying to lead them down the best path to be professionals. Players today have a lot of free time and money. I’m trying to help them to mange their time and money – we offer financial classes on how to manage money and budget. A lot of these players come from humble beginnings so we try to give them some experience managing money.

First off, can you let me know what’s next for you – I know you just recently retired or are you still interested in playing if you get a call?

Well I finished playing a couple of years ago. Really, even before I was done playing I was done. My heart just wasn’t in it. I had a construction background growing up – I loved the process of building and creating.

When I was young I worked with my family – they did framing and I was the low man on the totem pole then. I was young but I loved it – that sense of accomplishment. Being able to finish projects – that sense of accomplishment.

First, can you let us know what you’ve been up to since your time in Pittsburgh?

It’s nice being retired! After Pittsburgh I worked at IMG handling financial planning strictly for football players – I was the VP there. It was fun for a while but I didn’t like it as much as being on the ownership side.

I was hired by the Houston Texans after that – I worked there until 2006, but my then-wife didn’t like Houston, so she and our kids moved back to Pittsburgh, where she was from. I continued to work for the Texans for a while, going back and forth to see my kids. But it was too much of a struggle – my kids were young and I missed being able to see them.

So, I came back to Pittsburgh in 2006. It was a difficult decision – I liked working with Charlie Casserly there and Dom Capers too. I enjoyed it there but I just had to go back.

First off, I know you joined the military after your time in the NFL – what drove that decision for you and how did you manage that transition?

My last year in the NFL – my second year in Pittsburgh – I was going through camp, recovering from surgery, and just realized I was behind guys like Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro. I was sitting in the hot tub after a practice talking to Al Villanueva, and he told me a personal story about his time in the Army and why he joined the Army that got the gears turning for me.

First off, why did you decide to choose the Steelers?

I felt like it was the best situation for me. The coaching staff and the offense they run – and the quarterback room – it was just a good situation for me to learn and grow. It was the best chance to play the game I love. I am super blessed to do it.
