First off, I know you’ve been coaching for a while – how did you get started as a coach and why?
I grew up the son of a coach – my dad coached high school football and I figured I’d end up coaching too. I was fortunate to have been able to play in the NFL first. I enjoy coaching this age of kids – 14-year olds are knuckleheads and it’s fun seeing them grow up.

First off, let me know what you’ve been up to since your time in the NFL?
After my time with the Redskins I got married and we bought and moved to a farm outside of DC, then sold that and moved to Lexington, Virginia. Then after that I got into real estate then started a bank and acted as the CFO and COO.
Unfortunately after that I got divorced, sold my interest in the bank and moved to Charlotte. But I’m here in Lexington now taking care of my mom and working some commercial interests I have here.
First off, what’s life been like since your time in the NFL?
After football I got jobs in the Gulf of Mexico in the oil business. Then when I was in Brownwood, Texas I got a call from a friend – an oilman named Danny Davis. He was friends with Robert Duvall – the actor – and told me he needed my help. Duvall was coming in and needed someone to take them around Texas to learn about the lifestyle for an upcoming movie called Tender Mercies he was doing.
I said “OK” and drove out to meet him at the airport. I saw this short, bald-headed guy come out and knew I had seen that guy before!
I picked him up in my truck – it had a bucket of beer in the back. Duvall told me later he thought he got in the wrong truck and was a dead man!

First off, what have you been up to lately?
I’ve been getting more into writing, producing and directing more. I guess that’s the normal progression as an actor. Connecting with people is a major part of what actors do through their roles and scripts. It’s natural as an extrovert to read something and embody that text into something you know. Producing is my new passion – I’m getting into that more now.

First off, I know you’ve become a successful high school coach – tell me a bit about that coaching journey?
I’m currently the head coach at Notre Dame High School, in Easton, PA. We play Class 3A football.
I’ve been coaching for over 26 years now. Even when I was playing as a pro I would coach when I was released. I spent 2000 to 2002 as an offensive assistant at Pius X High School in the off-seasons – that was where I played as a kid.

First off, any upcoming projects you can/want to discuss?
My wife just recently wrote a book about me called Journey to the Inner Light about my career – from writing music for Star Trek to my jazz career and work producing records. Inner Light is probably the most famous Star Trek episode – that is the best known piece of music I wrote for the franchise.
I live in Martha’s Vineyard now six months of the year. We live on a sailboat the other half of the year in Mexico. I’m an avid sailor – I used to live in Malibu. We decided to sell our house and sail and just kept going! It sounds romantic, but I like to call it “Fixing things in exotic places!”

First off, what’s the plan now? What’s next?
That’s a hard question now. My son is involved in coaching now – he’s with the Cowboys. I have two daughters and I’d like to be there as they continue to grow. So I’m on hold right now. I’m still working out and watching film but right now things are on hold.
You’ve coached at all levels – is there a preference now between head coach or coordinator?
It’s all time-consuming. As a head coach you run the whole club – you handle the offense, defense and special teams. It really depends on what you want to do. I think I’d most like at this point to be around younger coaches and helping them develop- that’s the most intriguing thing to me. Like an advisor – for an NFL club.
I was a head coach in the XFL last year and that was fun, dealing with the GM. I had a blast doing that because we could hand-pick our players. That was enjoyable.

First off, what are you up to now – Ratt and Contraband tours, etc?
I’m basically retired – we’re talking about a reunion next year – Steven, Warren and myself. But for now I’m golfing, riding my bike and taking care of my pets! I’m always looking for something to do.
It’s different now. I’m in bed early and up early. Now I’m waking up when I used to go to bed!
I still like to rock, too. But I had a lot of medical stuff going on – a spinal fusion, hip replacement…I used to be very athletic – raced dirt bikes and snow and water skied. And drummed – there’s a lot of movement in drumming. But the surgeon told me that it was all cumulative trauma – it just wore on my body and I just need to deal with the outcomes now as I do what I do!

David: It comes out in theaters in Pittsburgh and all across the country and Puerto Rico today – you can see the website for how to buy tickets
On the 13th the Byham theater will show the movie, and PNC Park will show it this Sunday on National Roberto Clemente Day
First off, how did you get interested in acting? Where did it start for you?
It’s crazy – my path has been different than most. I was a good athlete as a kid. I was a 6’0 white dude that happened to be captain of my basketball and baseball teams!
I was real good as a pitcher. In fact Dejan Kovacevic interviewed me when I was a Senior in high school – I was one of the top 10 prospects in 1990.
After high school I went to Mount St. Mary’s – they had a great basketball program – they are always in the NCAA Tournament. I played baseball there – playing college baseball was always my dream. My dad and I used to watch the College World Series on ESPN together.
Pitching took me to college. In high school we won a lot of games and were in the WPIAL playoffs.
