First off, why did you decide to try out with the Steelers – what went into the decision?

It was kind of a weird process – I was trying to get a contract with any team – some teams showed interest but I didn’t get offers. Then the Steelers called – they said they were interested and  extended the offer to come to camp. My agent had reached out to Omar Khan and asked if he was interested in bringing me in – they were friends and Omar said he was interested and that’s when I got the offer.

I looked at their history of developing small school prospects and went with that.

They also have a good history of bringing in Polynesian players – how much did your Polynesian background influence you as a player?

Seeing how other Polynesian players flourished there – it seems like the Steelers have a thing for Polys. Seeing that influenced me – how they help guys use talents in the right way.

Know any of the guys on the team?

I don’t, no, but I want to meet them and get to know them – especially the offensive linemen.

How did you get started playing football in Hawaii?

I originally played rugby in Hawaii – that’s where I was born and raised. I started that at six – they didn’t have age limits then. At seven I started getting into football – that’s when it all started.

I rotated up until high school between rugby, football and basketball, then narrowed it down to football once I got to high school.

How would you describe your playing style?

I’m very versatile for a big guy – I need to work on things obviously like technique. I can move for a big guy – we ran pulls, counters at Lindenwood…I just need to work on my technique – especially my hand usage and re-setting. Working on sinking my hips more on bull rushes.

How do you see your fit with the Steelers offensive scheme?

They are very physical – they like to be in your face and run the ball, but they look for those passing opportunities too. At Lindenwood we ran a bunch of stuff the Steelers run – inside and outside zones, pulls…I think I’ve done enough of the things they run do start off with and can learn the other things on the fly.

You’ve played inside and outside – tackle and guard – where do you see them wanting you in camp?

The Steelers told me they are looking at me primarily as a tackle, so I’m preparing for that. I’ve played across the whole line – center in high school, left guard then left tackle in college. I’m prepared to help them anywhere I can. I even long-snapped in high school – I still got it!

Any special teams experience?

I played on the PAT unit – left guard and left tackle and some at the left tight end spot, though I wasn’t lined up as an eligible player.

What’s the starting goal for you?

Just to get a contract and get to camp. I have small and big goals. I want to make the roster and get playing time and develop there and eventually become a starter.

Lastly, what should we know about you that isn’t football related?

I recently started playing pickle ball – now that the weather is nicer I’m playing that more!
